I am planning to homeschool my 7th grade boy this fall. He attended public middle school for 6th grade and had a bad year. He was not challenged academically (classes were easy and boring for him) and he was teased because he is smart and a minority (1/2 Asian in a school w/ 70% White and 25% Hispanic). He is also not the typical soccer or baseball playing kid. He is now on a swim team and does martial arts. I'm trying to make the best choices with him and for him. I think homeschooling will be OK, but I worry about him making a transition to 8th grade in a private school or 9th grade in a public or private high school. He is a nice kid, but really got picked on. Any suggestions?
Homeschooling for 7th grade boy (middle school)?
My advice would be to homeschool now, and worry about returning to school if or when you decide to do it. 7th grade is almost all review, if your son was bored in 6th he'll be snoozing through 7th!
You might try a curriculum or a mix of curriclums that have placement tests so you can put him right where he needs to be academically.

I would say homeschooling has it's benefits but..your child wont get the socialization skills he's going to need and i would say a private school is a lot better than a public school. and the kids are usually nicer. But he's your son. Ask him what he wants first and decide from there what you think is best.
Reply:If you decide to homeschool him, join a homeschool association in your area. Some of my neighbors homeschool their kids and they belong to those groups. They go on field trips, and have activities and projects for the kids, so they are around others.
Reply:I have an awesome program for homeschooling we have clubs teachers and the most awesome outings and the most neatest lessons he will never be picked on here and we actually have a school for the smartest kids. that is a shame the way he was treated you tell him those kind of people make the world a rotten place. they aren't worth much. my son is 13 almost 14 and loves his program and if you decided to go back to public that is fine to they will give you a free computer with all lessons on it it an awesome program give it try and you will see your child grow in many ways public school stinks the kids seem to be bad good luck to you both it can be very frustrating your an awesome mom keep up the good work and if you get on k12 look for Mr. Marley the most awesome math teacher around you will see us there good luck.www.k12.com

Reply:Coming from an indivdual who was teased in school and was later home-schooled for four years (5th - 8th grade) I can tell you that home-schooling would not be the best alternative for your son. My mother home-schooled me and I felt that it wasn't healthy for me to be in that type of environment. I had problems adjusting to high school academically and socially, which were problems I did not have before being home-schooled. Now I am 25 years old and I am a teacher myself and I am still dealing with these same issues. Believe me I endured the same problems as your son in regards to being teased, but homeschooling is not the best route to take. My advice would be to enroll him in a highly recommended private school. Good luck.

Tired of being P.C. about my views. You'll either agree or think me an A**?
I've been responding and reading for several days. Without being P.C. Lose the EGO, belts are worthless. No one style is better than any other in the ARTS of Martial arts. They all do Kata and Tag, get over it. Hate me, send me crappy responses Blah, Blah, Blah. You want spirital enlightment get religion you want to defend yourself learn somthing besides Kata and Tag. I can't wait to hear you all hate me. Why won't schools still accept or put out challenges anymore (Gracies still do, there excluded then) you think you'd actually be able to fight with skills learned in normal dojo, and win against a real fighter. Bring on the hate mail. Bless all you who pay ever month to learn a kata or pay to play tag and win a plastic trophy. O.K. I'm better now. Thanks for reading my rant. I think its all out now. Good post, full of common sense. Of course those who train in MARTIAL arts without actually FIGHTING are going to have problems with what you say, but it's 100% true. If you practice this stuff to learn self defense, then you better be actually training with people who are fighting back...lol. Otherwise, that false sense of security you're getting by doing choreographed techniques and playing tag will get you into a crap load of trouble if a real situation occurs.

Skills are nothing. It is like walking -- a basic skill that everyone can do. Many people can walk across a rope bridge without any difficulty. However, dare you walk across a rope bridge which is 10,000 feet above ground or a rope bridge with hungry sharks underneath ? You have the skills but you may not have the courage to apply your skills.
With trained skills and body co-ordination, hopefully that Martial artists can gain the confidence. If you want to bully someone, just pick the weak one that you know for sure that you can beat him -- no need to learn martial arts. On the contrary, no matter how good you are, there will be someone better than you.
Martial arts are not for fighting -- learning how to shoot is more effective.

Child prodigy, it sucks!?
Since i was 5 years old i have dedicated all my time to basketball. I have had personal coaches paid by my parents %26amp; have won at the national level at many ages. My high school team won state championship last year. I am ranked at the top 50 at the highschool level even though i am a freshman, %26amp; am considered a child prodigy since the age of 12. The problem is that people feel intimidated by my presence %26amp; i dont know what to do. My only friends are some of my teammates Whenever i walk into a room, like the cafeteria, people stare at me. I started taking mixed martial arts 1 year ago because Older guys than me always want to start fights %26amp; try to beat me up. As a result I have been suspended from my schools 3 times. The principle told me if it happens again, i will be expelled from the school. I dont know why they pick on me so much. It's not like i am short or cocky, cocky maybe a little but not that i go telling people that i am better so i dont see what is the prob what should i do??

You have a gift honey. Ordinary people can be very jealous of those with special gifts and talents. When I started high school all the boys thought I was beautiful and the girls hated me. Just be extra nice to everyone. People can't be intimidated by you if you treat everyone as a friend. It's pretty amazing that you're so talented, most boys only dream of your level of skill. Treat everyone like a friend, and they won't be intimidated by you.

The only advice I can give is be yourself, do not let other peoples attitude change you. You have every right to be who you are, I know it hurts but you must ignore those who stare at you... With those bullies, try to get away with them, defend when you need to, never throw the first punch... Never be the one to throw it, let them be the first to start it. Its hard to be different, I know that from experience even if I am not a prodigy... You have to ignore those who look at you oddly, try to make conversations with other people to show your like any other kid who likes to have friends.

Child prodigy, it sucks.?

OK you will face a lot of problems like this your whole life. What your suppose to do is just be yourself. Don't let them change you. Expecially in the big leagues you will have to deal with certain thing like this,or worse. You just stay true to yourself, but being cocky is just another sign of insecurity. Try to watch what you say sometimes to certain people. Its ok everyone seems to have a certain cockyness in them so don't feel bad about it lol. Don't go looking for revenge on these people either, because one day you will be better than them. They are just haters lol. But if they try to fight just tell the principal whats up he/or she can help. If not then just learn to ignore there comments.

Reply:Regardless of the 'prodigy' status, after the first incident you should have brought it to the attention of both your parents and the principal and explained the problem. If the fights continued, you should, again bring it to their attention. If the principal is suspending you, then he believes you are somehow involved or at fault. At this point, you're at the 3 strike limit.
So, you should get to class early and leave school late (later than the older guys who want to pick fights). Find something to do after school, when not practicing, that keeps you away from these older guys. There's got to be something you can do to avoid them. Also, don't hang around where you know you might run into them.
Keep telling yourself that once you get out of High School, none of what's going on now will matter (other than your grades). So, focus on getting higher grades. If you happen to make it to the NBA and actually make lots of cash as a star player, great. If not, you will need the grades so you can go to college and get a degree; ultimately, so you can get a good paying job if the NBA doesn't pan out.

If the fights continued, you should, again bring it to their attention. If the principal is suspending you, then he believes you are somehow involved or at fault. At this point, you're at the 3 strike limit.
So, you should get to class early and leave school late (later than the older guys who want to pick fights). Find something to do after school, when not practicing, that keeps you away from these older guys. There's got to be something you can do to avoid them. Also, don't hang around where you know you might run into them.
Keep telling yourself that once you get out of High School, none of what's going on now will matter (other than your grades). So, focus on getting higher grades. If you happen to make it to the NBA and actually make lots of cash as a star player, great. If not, you will need the grades so you can go to college and get a degree; ultimately, so you can get a good paying job if the NBA doesn't pan out.

When at the movies, if you stick around for the credits, start to make notes about the names of the stunt coordinators on the films. If you rent movies, you can easily find out who these people are and by Googling them, find where they work from. Many stunts are coordinated out of Hollywood. You are in NJ, so your first contact might be through the Screen Actors Guild in New York City.
Most stuntpeople have come into the business through relatives or people they know who are working. Specific training for stunt work may be out there, but on the job training will be most important.
Learn the lingo. Ask working stuntpeople how they do a gag. Go to work on a local film and get to know these people and ask questions. Asking is the key. Most knowledgable actors who do stunts are happy to tell you about their experiences.
