Child prodigy, it sucks.?

Since i was 5 years old i have dedicated all my time to basketball. I have had personal coaches paid by my parents %26amp; have won at the national level at many ages. My high school team won state championship last year. I am ranked at the top 50 at the highschool level even though i am a freshman, %26amp; am considered a child prodigy since the age of 12. The problem is that people feel intimidated by my presence %26amp; i dont know what to do. My only friends are some of my teammates Whenever i walk into a room, like the cafeteria, people stare at me. I started taking mixed martial arts 1 year ago because Older guys than me always want to start fights %26amp; try to beat me up. As a result I have been suspended from my schools 3 times. The principle told me if it happens again, i will be expelled from the school. I dont know why they pick on me so much. It's not like i am short or cocky, cocky maybe a little but not that i go telling people that i am better so i dont see what is the prob what should i do??

Child prodigy, it sucks.?
OK you will face a lot of problems like this your whole life. What your suppose to do is just be yourself. Don't let them change you. Expecially in the big leagues you will have to deal with certain thing like this,or worse. You just stay true to yourself, but being cocky is just another sign of insecurity. Try to watch what you say sometimes to certain people. Its ok everyone seems to have a certain cockyness in them so don't feel bad about it lol. Don't go looking for revenge on these people either, because one day you will be better than them. They are just haters lol. But if they try to fight just tell the principal whats up he/or she can help. If not then just learn to ignore there comments.
Reply:Ha. Thats a funny story. If you really wanted an answer to this you could have said "People are jealous of me, so they beat me up. What should I do?" Instead you had to make up a gay story trying to impress people. You would have just asked your parents or somebody anyways you jackass. Report It

Reply:I don't believe you.
Reply:Regardless of the 'prodigy' status, after the first incident you should have brought it to the attention of both your parents and the principal and explained the problem. If the fights continued, you should, again bring it to their attention. If the principal is suspending you, then he believes you are somehow involved or at fault. At this point, you're at the 3 strike limit.

So, you should get to class early and leave school late (later than the older guys who want to pick fights). Find something to do after school, when not practicing, that keeps you away from these older guys. There's got to be something you can do to avoid them. Also, don't hang around where you know you might run into them.

Keep telling yourself that once you get out of High School, none of what's going on now will matter (other than your grades). So, focus on getting higher grades. If you happen to make it to the NBA and actually make lots of cash as a star player, great. If not, you will need the grades so you can go to college and get a degree; ultimately, so you can get a good paying job if the NBA doesn't pan out.

How do I ask this girl out?

Well she doesn't go to the same school as me, the school dances at both schools don't let people in from other schools, she is too young to go out on a "date" with. What do I do? She goes to martial arts with me on wednesdays and thursdays. Next time I see her is next thursday, 1 week from now. Please help me.

How do I ask this girl out?
go on a group date with her and just have her say to her parents that you guys are just hanging out to bond with martial arts buddies.

or... have a few of your martial arts buddies come over to your house and invite her and let everyone know that its just for extra sparring practice or a hangout then you can hang out with her in ur room or something while others are watching a movie. that might do the trick.
Reply:Go to her home %26amp; befriend her 'mom'
Reply:well first of all have a conversation with her and make her feel special.

Also a bit of flirting never herts.

And after a bit ask if she wants to go to the beach or something like that

or the movies.

its not that hard to ask someone out

if they say no just remeber there are alot more girls in the sea and that you dont have to just get a girlfriend straight away.
Reply:Okay. First things first.

1. You must be already in the friend circle she has. If you have talked to her once or twice it's very likely she'll reject you.

2. Try to talk to her in private, say something like "listen I need to ask you something, can we go over there"

3. Say to her "See, I was thinking that maybe if you wanted to we could like catch a movie sometime this week. Just to hang around. Can you make it?"

4. If she says her parents will say no "Oh, I see... Mmm, maybe we can do something else? Do you know something we can do? I dunno... go for a walk."
Reply:you know best way to get to a girls heart is flowers bring her flowers and then be polite and always ask the dad if you can take his daughter out on a date! she might be too young but you never know talking to the father or maybe even the mother if shes in a single parent home might work! i mean it worked on my dad when i first started dating!

How to get in the stuntman business?

im 18 and wish to become a martial arts stuntman. im located in nj, whats the closest school i can go to? what steps should i take?anything similar i can tkae in college? i have prior martial arts experience.

How to get in the stuntman business?
Show business is tough.

If you are planning to go to college, good. Being educated makes us all better able to understand life.

Thus, if you take a specific course of study in college and develop your martial arts skills, get gymnastic experience and spend the next four years educating your head and your body, you're on your way.

When at the movies, if you stick around for the credits, start to make notes about the names of the stunt coordinators on the films. If you rent movies, you can easily find out who these people are and by Googling them, find where they work from. Many stunts are coordinated out of Hollywood. You are in NJ, so your first contact might be through the Screen Actors Guild in New York City.

Most stuntpeople have come into the business through relatives or people they know who are working. Specific training for stunt work may be out there, but on the job training will be most important.

Learn the lingo. Ask working stuntpeople how they do a gag. Go to work on a local film and get to know these people and ask questions. Asking is the key. Most knowledgable actors who do stunts are happy to tell you about their experiences.

Now is the time for education. Ease your way into the Business and remember that people die and get broken bones doing stunts. It goes with the territory. Are you up for that? It ain't like falling off a log.. even falling off a log.

Best DVD Camcorder for the buck?

Hello. I am looking for a great DVD Camcorder. I need this so I can record Martial Arts Demos Tournaments, and Instructional Videos for our school. I would like to stay in the $600 but if it really makes a difference I could go to 800. But anymore than that Is just impossible. It needs to have a good zoom, detail, and be able to catch VERY fast movement. I know... these guys move faster than most cameras can catch... but maybe the digital world has something to offer me that my old 8mm cant. I dont care about size... USB would be nice... but im not picky. If it has a DVD i dont need a usb port... Full size dvd preferred.

Thanks

Best DVD Camcorder for the buck?
Full size DVD camera is going to cost way more than 800. You need to go with a mini-dvd format.(8cm vs 12cm) Hitachi made the first one, they gots several models that will get you what you're looking for. Check out the DZ-GX3300

FITness "help"?

I'm a male at the age of 14. I have a nearly perfect BMI. I play sports- sometimes (some seasons), do martial arts once a week, and have gym in school everyay. I don't move around much at home though :(.

I know it takes time- but what exercises do you recommend I do at home everyday or every other day.

I know I shouldn't really lift weights at my age.

I want to look better than good. SO, should I do 100 push ups ,sit ups, and squats everyday??-what should I do?

AND-at the routine you suggest-about how long (I know it takes long-But on AVERAGE for my age)- HOw long will it take to accomplish this task?

FITness "help"?

Karate School? plz help I'm new to this!?

I think I have found a good karate school, but I wanted to get opinions from people with more experience than me. I'm only 14 and I've never done martial arts so I'm not really sure how to tell if a school is good. The one I found is very focused on sparring and you have to get reports from school and home saying your are respectful and have good academics before you can test for a belt. the testing fees are as follows.

High White $15, Gold $39, High Gold $39, Orange $39, High Orange $39, Green $59, High Green $59, Purple $59, High Purple $59, Blue $59, High Blue $59, Red $79, Low Brown $79, Brown $79, High Brown $79, Conditional Black $99, First Degree Black $200, Second Degree Black $500, Third Degree Black $500.

Are these prices reasonable? From the sounds of this school would you attend, why or why not?

Oh, and they are REALLY persistant to enforce respect. They have all these rules for speaking with instructors and speeches you say before starting class and when you end.

Karate School? plz help I'm new to this!?
When I went to martial arts training they were very much against charging you for your belt. THey did not want the monetary pull to make them considor you for promotion if you were not ready. The prices sound reasonable if you are to be charged..... just look at the higher ranks, watch them spar and do katas and if they seem VERY good then go with it. If they seem sloppy and as if they do not know what they are doing then go onto the next school. Oh, and respect in any system is NUMBER ONE!!!!!! Ush!
Reply:I like the respect aspect of it. I think that's vital. You might want to find out if the sensei carries liability insurance as accidents sometimes happen. The prices don't sound too bad. Can you tell me what the difference in look is between Orange and High Orange? That sounds interesting.
Reply:sounds like some bull to me. reports from school?wtf?and wats with the speeches before and after class?also u shouldnt have to pay to test for a belt unless its private time with the instructor and even then it shouldnt cost that much.honestly there are really no good karate schools anymore, learn mma or muay thai
Reply:oh, that's great. sometimes, we must learn something new, but, mustn't be afraid. if you really like it, try it until you can do it and practice well!
Reply:YUP its a really good school and the prices are very reasonable, some schools charge like $50 every month
Reply:Wow! That particular school has wayyy to many grades! high white? low brown? sounds like different types of bread.

it sounds like the club are more interested in generating revenue that anything else. my karate club charges $40 a grading, with the only requirement to enter being is that the sensei thinks you are up for it and have deserved it. Then 3 hours of hell later, you progress up. Mine goes white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, brown, conditional black, black+, there are 10 ranks at kyu, and 10 at dan.

that school probably uses the 'need good grades at school' to entice your folks into thinking 'well, if it makes him work hard at school i'll cough up the dough...'

any karate club you go to will have respectfor the sensei, and japanese sayings at the start and end of class
Reply:It is very expensive for me and i think it is unreasonable. But i maybe wrong because I live in Indonesia and the prices overseas can vary. In Indonesia, most martial arts schools are cheaper than that.

The school is actually good because it focuses on sparring, so that you can measure how good your Karate skills are. However what is the type of sparring? The best type is the one without any protectors, it represents your fighting ability the most, and the worst sparring is the one with so many rules, e.g no punch or kick to the head, no grapples, no knee and elbow strikes.

Finally, the quality of the school depends mostly on the instructor, is the instructor a Japanese Karateka? Or just some guy saying he has the 9th Degree Black Belt and he is still under 40 yrs (this indicates he is self promoted thus also indicates the school is a McDojo)
Reply:hmm prices are a little pricy but still in the range of reasonable. Do you think you could give us a website?
Reply:I was hoping as I read your question that you had found a good school.

You were right to ask here for advise.

As one answerer already mentioned "Way Too Many" belts!

Not to start a big deal but "old school"

American Karate,or Kenpo,or whatever,goes like this:(with some variation)White-yellow-orange

-blue-green-brown-black-1st-2nd-etc.

You would see degrees of brown and green stripe now and again but nothing I have ever seen can equal what you wrote in your question.

I can not speak on the instruction,I don't even know the style. But dividing up the ranks as they do is a "Red Flag"

and I am getting a bad vibe about this school.

You can expect respect to be the top of the list at any "good" school.

Take a pass on schools that have kids running all over and doing horseplay instead of training, stretching, or cleaning up.

Check out schools that have been in town for ten or twenty years and see what they have to offer.

Let us know what you find and we will do our best to lend some advise.

Ref:

In the old days the white belt was simply dyed to a new color. This repeated dying process dictates the type of belt color and the order of the colors!. The standard belt color system is white, yellow, green, brown, and black. In some Karate school and styles, the color order is white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, black.

karate belt colors

Due to the dying process, it is practical to increasingly use darker colors. All of this came about shortly after the second world war, when Japan was a very poor country, and dying the belts to a new color was a cheap way to have a visible, simple and effective ranking system.

The dying of the belts became part of the Karate tradition and was also adapted in other countries. In Australia, Sensei Terry Lyon of Lyon-Karate.com reports that in the early 70s, Australian Karate students also dyed their belts to their new color.

Reply:tats the problem with karate ..for every thing they need money...see i m doing muay thai n i dont pay anything then monthly fee....i m allowed to train unlimited...n we dont have belt system in muay thai so we dont have to pay for grading...we just focus on fight n how to destroy our opponent...i think yr club is bit crook...dont go over there...they r just behind money...if u r still interested in karate then do some research in yr area...n go to geniune one...and rember to spar alot...
Reply:Those prices sound about right if you want to continuously get ripped off.

I can't see how it is justified to charge all these fees for promotion.

How much extra work is involved to do testing? This is a shame and only happens in the USA!

When a student is ready according to whether or not I feel the level of achievement has been attained, I award the rank.

The student's real test has been all the time put in working hard to learn and excel.

I looked this up for you. You can look for yourself, but I saw about three schools you should check out before you sing up for this mcdojo...

I included the link with all the schools in your area including theses...

East Valley MA,

Meng's Wing Chun

Dipalma's Team USA

Also the Aikido and the White Crane school look good.

What if game???

ok. suppose you are a guy.

you are rich, hot, you go to a prestigeous boarding school with famous people, your a smart alec, slightly smart, MVP football/basketball jock....

would you ever go for a really smart, pretty cute, middle class girl who plays golf, lacrosse, martial arts, but goes to a really hard public school, who's also a complete smart alec.... btw she's a year and a half younger, and really shoert (5 foot)...

please tell me the truth....just wondering...

What if game???
That could totally happen for you!! It did for me =)

I'm the same kind of chick. With the kind of man are talking about. We have been together for over a year now. And are planning a spring 2009 wedding =)

Don't forget that you being middle class Should have nothing to do with it. If he understands this he's a good guy.

---Good luck!
Reply:Who are the famous people?
Reply:I think it depends on the guy and girl - If they have chemstry and the timing is right = its totally possible.

**Assuming that they have interaction with each other.
Reply:first if she ask that question she is with not doubt not smart at all, anybody that thinks she is smart is a dumb, no matter how many degrees she has,, they just care about looks, but you can stock him and suceed by being persistence no matter how many times you fail or just move on a find a nice guy that you also will be loyal to.

You guys are both athletic, and it sounds like you have fun joking around together. I think he would like you. The only way to know is to try. The worst that can happen is you guys would remain friends.
Reply:yeah if there's a good connection between them
Reply:99% not. if u re poor and short go for rich ugly guy, or dumb or short. if this guy is absolutely perfect he will find a perfect girl (which u, with your short height and no money are obviously not). and another clue - guys don't like smart alec girls. u re not supposed to be a dumb tree either, just wise - wise people don't show they re smarter than anybody

Can most asians fight?

Hello, i was just wondering which asian race put more energy into martial arts. This 100 pound asian girl at my school got into a fight, and nearly put this girl in the hospital. I was stocked! Do most asians know marital arts or something ? Or is it the older generations? DO they teach that in their public school in China?

Can most asians fight?
I am indian and can fight with any woman. I beat up many women in school and college and slap them if they misbehave. I hate it coz a few hate me or are rather scared of me. But this is for the nasty ones and am otherwise nice and sweet.

I can fight and a real fight is what I mean. ♥
Reply:I'm asian. is she an exchange student? i remeber they tought us how to fight in school.
Reply:No, this is putting a lable on people. Its like saying all Black people are lazy, all Polish are stupid and all Itallians are in the mob. Lables and none of them are true or warrant any further thought as they can seem racist. (Please note that I used these racist examples for the purpose of stateing a point they do not reflect my personal beliefs)
Reply:Yes, just about any person, under the right circumstances, can punch, kick, or fire a gun. That includes Asians who make up at least half the world's population.

Also, thanks to shadows for the "no stereotypes" comment. I'm polish, and the top math student in my school.

Ho-ly shitttttttttt?

ok so i started martial arts in september and it's a small school, no more than 6 to 1 people usually come to class during the beggining of martial arts. In the class theres this 17 year old lady. i had a crush on another cute lady from high school for months, then she eventually rejected me and sorta lied to me. tear tear (happens all the time). There's been other girls i liked on and off but it wasn't that crush feeling it's been that flirting feeling. But currently i been starting to like this lady for some reason. She's an experienced martial artist (not a black belt) but almost there... I don't know how i truely feel about her. Is she just another female? is she just another person who i wont have a chance with? it's a small asian girl and im a big white guy. lol, what's funny is that she can kick my ***. anyways, what do you people think i should do, how do you think my instructor will feel? he gave me advice before on my previous crush but this is a whole new beggining.

Ho-ly shitttttttttt?
ask fo her msn then later ask for her number
Reply:Yes go ask her out
Reply:Haha..Agh. you'll be fine!!!! Ask her for her cell, msn, email, ect. it'll do it!!! xD
Reply:just go with the flow. listen to your heart. that's all I can say. you most likely have feelings for her so just go for it. your instructors don't have to know and your appearance together (about the race/size) wont matter either :] just go for it! see if she's interested.
Reply:put on your sparring gear son, were going to settle this in the ring. Jk, just go for it, tease her and ask for her help on forms. And dont talk to your instructors about your crushes, thats weird.
Reply:You are obviously attracted to her strength and conviction. She is good at something your interested in. Martial Arts is very spiritual in nature, and her energy is most likely very powerful. I mention all of this in hope of showing you the depth of your crush... since you ask if she is "just another female"

I think you know the girl is special. I'm guessing that if you focus on your own practice, and take it seriously she will notice. Do what you are there to do...
Reply:Let her kick your *** [which is not hard to do]. Then when you are on the ground, say 'Will you go out with me?"

Be prepared for her to kick you before she says "No."

:)

Which should I do???

This summer I am most likely going to start a Mixed Martial Art. I already wrestle for my school. What should I do... Mui Thai, Judo, Brazilian Jujitsu, etc.???

Which should I do???
Well it depends on what you want to do if you want to strike people then oh Yea Muay Thai is the way to go, if you want to grab and flip and arm lock etc go into Aikido / Judo / Jiu Jitsu. If you want to do both then join a school that is a MMA school. I beleave in one Art at a time is good though i'm in Muay Thai and you learn ALOT from a true muay thai school. I've been to a school that says muay thai / jiu jitsu and the only muay thai they did was sparring ( Thats IT ) soo you have to watch them "mma" schools i'm not a big fan. But, muay thai is a really good Art and there is diffrent styles if you really want to get into it there is Muay Thai, and Muay Boran thats Old OLD school muay thai its hard to find but if you go to Thailand and train you could find it there and its cheap to train there its about $350 and month to live and eat and train at a gym so look into it, have a good day. Good luck
Reply:Try them all and go for the club that has the best team spirit, sounds excitinghope it goes well for you
Reply:they are all good:

judo is good for takedowns but is something you are probably already learning in wrestling,

bjj specialize in ground fighting so i'd look into that to eventually but like i said in wrestling you should be learning to move around on the ground and gain dominate positioning(which can allow you to work ground and pound)

but since you are doing wrestling with is a grappling art you should look into getting striking down too. so i'd do with muay thai
Reply:Muay thai, or some other striking art.
Reply:If you go to a MMA gym you will learn mainly BJJ and Muay Thai. You will also learn a little judo, boxing, different forms of wrestling and some of what every else has learned through different experiences.

Since your a wrestler, BJJ is what you would really like to start on. this way you can avoid submissions and apply some of your own. Make sure to take some boxing or kick boxing in case you get a guy you can't take down your opponent.
Reply:Depends on your body structure. If you medium height and bulky, consider Judo or anything like that. If you tall, flexible and quick go to Tae Kwan Do. If you short than try something with more on hand combat. Also do you prefer to fight on your feet or ground or both? Consider that too

Do you like the name Darrius Fabian-Jett and Evangeline Danielle-Belle?

Last name is Li. My honey bun (wife) and I talk over and we decided to have two middle names instead of one. My middle name is Emerson and we want something different for our kids. Jett with 2 "t" to honor one of my favorite martial artist Jet Li. And my son and daughter can take care of any bully who teased them at school. I will teach them martial arts. I have a black belt in Kung Fu, Karate, and Judo. So what do you guys think? You like?

Do you like the name Darrius Fabian-Jett and Evangeline Danielle-Belle?
Nice
Reply:No. Not a good idea. You're planning to teach martial arts to handle the teasing bullies? Why not give your kids more traditional names so they won't have to suffer in the first place?

I have suffered all my life because of the awful names my parents gave me. I had a horrible childhood because of the teasing and bullying!
Reply:How about Darrius Saber-Jet and Evangeline Dannia-Belle? Good luck and congrats!
Reply:I think Danielle-Belle sounds funny because it rhymes, but I really like the name Evangeline!
Reply::( your name is saber li. that's worse enough......................... your kids will already be teased b/c of YOUR name.... why ruin their life????????????????????????????????????... jet li is my uncle, and he doesn't want a retard to be named in honor of him.)

i just read your info.

About me: I am Mattimus Emerson Li and my alias name is Saber Emerson Li. My Chinese name is Ching Wan Chin Yung Li. I have 4 Chinese names. Long brown hair and two silver ring earing just like my avatar. A gladiator tattoo in the middle of my chest and a gladiator silver sterling ring. A sword and martial arts collector. Black belt in Karate, Judo, and Kung Fu. I know Kendo, fencing, and archery. Favorite superheroes are Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Spawn, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, War Machine, Lady Death, Power Rangers, Kamen Rider 555 %26amp; Kaixa and Ultraman Nexus. Favorite musics are techno, trance, dance club mix, and rock. Half Japanese. I dress in gothic and matrix style of clothing. A metrosexual man. My dad is Maximus. Grandpa is Maximillian. Three brothers named Octivius, Bruticus, and Augustus. Two sisters named Udonna and Athena. Also wear four sterling silver rings, one regular ring, a silver cross bracelet, and a crystal necklace. Wear woman's perfume. 89/92 batmobile is the best.

yeah..................................... considering your whole family is a little wack....... idk about your kids. maybe you should just follow the tradition.
Reply:They will need to know how to protect themselves if you do that to them. Sorry. Much to long and too many names.
Reply:I like Darrius Fabian-Jett and Evangeline, but not so much the Danielle-Belle. It sounds a bit too repetative because it rhymes... Something else would probably work better with the Danielle than Belle. I do like that you will teach your children to stand up for themselves, though!
Reply:I think that the girls name is too much. I was told by a wise old woman once that you should stand at the bottom of your stairs and yell the name that you have chosen for your new baby, (the whole name as if they were in trouble) it should roll off your tongue and feel natural. That is why my little one is Isabelle instead of Isabella.
Reply:solid names for future welfare recipients, jolly good show chap!
Reply:A- They don't flow.

B- You're an idiot.

C- Stop asking this same question.

What university will accept me?

I am currently a junior in high school with an estimated 3.8 GPA. I took AP European History and AP Biology in my sophomore year, and now I am taking AP Physics B, AP English and Composition, AP Spanish 7-8, AP U.S. History, Math Analysis Honors, and Physiology Honors. I have a lot of community service because I do it at the Chamber of Commerce in my area and volunteer every year to the Democratic Head Quarters. I founded and am a President of a club, cinematography club, and I am currently making a movie about the school to convince more students to coming. I am a Link Crew leader for new coming students and take art and martial arts as extra curricular activities outside of school, and go to Armenian School every Saturday. For some reason, lately, I've been having doubts that I am not good enough to get accepted to good schools. I don't know why...maybe its that time of year or something.

What university will accept me?
More importantly, you should choose to apply to a school that specializes in what you're interested in doing with the rest of your life.

The University of Miami would certainly consider you.

Miami is a great Marine Science, Medical, Engineering, Accounting, Law, Drama and Music School.
Reply:Bloomsburg University in PA. Rated #1 in USA Today for four years running!

Can I get into Oxford or Cambridge?

I go to a public high school and am in lots of extra-curriculars. Namely I am:

Editor in chief of the school paper AND literary magazine

I write for local news sources

i have won awards for my writing

and active member of the school radio station

a part time teacher at hebrew school

I have 2 blackbelts in martial arts (tae kwondo and kempo karate)

I am close to fluent in English, Latin, Spanish, Hebrew, and Lithuanian

I have a gpa just over 4.0, and i'm in the tope 10% of my class, but i am not in the top 20 kids (i don't think)

I play viola and violin in my spare time

I plan to study philosophy and eventually become a lawyer.

How hard is oxford and cambridge to get into compared to American Schools (like Yale, Harvard, Columbia, Penn?) Is it easier for an American? Thanks!

Can I get into Oxford or Cambridge?
You will most likely be offered a place if you apply, with a condition of getting certain grades.

Hope that helps,

Simon H

P.S: Shouldn't you study law?

Why dont people ever Kick or use some skill when street fighting?

I'm 16 years old, In high school. I think really Highly of Self Defense and Martial Arts in general. In High school I see fighting nearly everyday. Most of the time, its just random punching, sometimes its some-what boxing. Why don't people ever use Kicks? or Elbows? Or Knees? I really think my kicking skills are amazing and I could probably break ribs with one kick. I can kick a basket ball like FEETS into the air (50?) So why are people so Hard assed and Think punching is everything?

Why dont people ever Kick or use some skill when street fighting?
The fear makes them panic and they just start throwing whatever comes out naturally. Kicks just are not a natural defense, and it takes years to make it a natural reflex. I've had so many guys with years of assorted arts come in to the gym and talk about how good they are. Most have never sparred at full speed or taken a real strike at 100%. The second they eat that first real strike they panic and forget everything they have learned. It takes months of full contact sparring for them to relax and use their skills. This is something the bjj guy and the "mma" guy that commented above should realize. One thinks he can end it with one punch, and the other thinks he's going to break someones knee. In reality after that one hitter quiter does not work for the "mma" guy and the bjj guy can't set up the knee bar to break the knee their suddenly in a panic because they have never really fought and they start throwing wild punches because they do not know what to do.
Reply:I'm a MMA and I never had to kick. One hit and they were out
Reply:Because they don't know how to fight and/or never taken Karate. 3 more months until my 2nd degree black belt.
Reply:People tend to see kicking as fighting dirty
Reply:My guess is you may benefit from joining a good class. Now bear in mind that the best fights are the ones that are never fought. Mind over matter ;-)
Reply:Its because they don't know what they are doing. Some people only kick and others only punch. Its because they don't know how to fight properly. 3 grades from black belt in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). And its simply down to the fact they have no technique. They just lash out.
Reply:Being an aggressive jerk a lot of times isn't the right frame of mind to learn and study organized fighting (Kung Fu, Karate, etc.). I'm glad you are studing something that will help mental and physical health. To many computer games being played. But, understand the concept of OVERKILL. You school buddies fighting don't really need to kick, elbow, or knee to make a point. Restraint is a LARGE part of martial arts. Study that part also.
Reply:there are a few different reasons. One is that they just do not train themselvs to. Another would be that it is still seen as fighting dirty by a lot of people. yet another reason would be that the people who have taken some lessons have never been able to make the transition from a class room invironment to the street situaiton. There is a big difference between the nice safe class where you have lots of pads and an instructor waiting to stop the fight and the real deal in the streets where there may or may not be some one to stop the fight or come to your aid if things are not going your way. Not to mention the fact that the rules are not the same. Meaning that there are no rules in the street. Then of course there is the fact that most people with any real skill do not go around getting into fights just to prove a point or look like a tuff guy. so these are a few of the reasons you will not see a lot of real skill in most street fights.
Reply:Classic Martial Arts works better against Classic Martial Arts. You'll see a great example of the down falls in the earlier UFC(s). I would tell you worry about being a warrior and a gentlemen..forget about beating up HS Kids. My Sensei always thought me that "people shouldn't fear a BlackBelt, they should feel safer he is present."
Reply:Their untrained and dont think about it. Besides punches are often more versatile and easier to land whereas a good kick will hurt but anything above the waist is generally caught fairly easy
Reply:i to see many fights. Its because they don't know how to properly use a kick or elbow but i do sometimes se knees. most kids want to end the fight fast and the fastest strike is a punch
Reply:Because kicking above the thigh is pretty risky. Kicking with boots and jeans, especially those lame tight popular ones today, is different from kicking in a loose light uniform barefoot.

But you should use knees elbows and low kicks though. Muay Thai is so much more deadly than American kickboxing b/c of knees and elbows
Reply:Im a gracie fighter , And i never kick either , you pull that wing chung kung fu fighting crap with me , im gunna shoot in , put you on the ground and break your knee.

street fighting dont gotta look like ballet like you see in the movies , its not pretty , it usually ends up with 2 guys wrestling on the ground with each other , punching each other in the face , till one guy looses.
Reply:hi i take martail arts and i know how u feel tell people this that feet are the advantage of all fights and strongest limb in the body tell them this that u stand and walk on your feet not hands try hand standing for 5 minuets youl crumble like a bug on kid pissed me off in this very conversation i heeled kicked him in the soler plexises and the fight lasted 2 seconds as i winded him out let me tell you that no one the same conversation about kicking is for girls good luck
Reply:Skilled fighters are wiser than to street fight, you lose all your rights in any corner of the sport. And the law screws ya too !
Reply:kicks are slower and you need balance. Punching is faster and humans feel more natural fighting back with the hands. Always legs are used in keeping the body standing, that's how a body will naturally interpret the use of legs. I mean, your arms have the ability to lock and swing, because it is not busy holding weight all the time.
Reply:I kick 'em dude!! That's my fav move.... And punch on their nose will slow our opponent coz their nose got broke dude.
Reply:Personally me, being a street fighter will tell you straight up that a person kicking looks like a ***** and people clown and like to say you can't fight. Kicks look much more awkward than punches. They can do more damage than a punch, but people don't like to look stupid even if it is for defending yourself. But i bet all street fighters will kick in order to save their life. Plus kicks are an easy way to get dropped, once one foot leaves the ground you've got half your balance, even for skilled fast kickers this is true.
Reply:Sometimes just standing toe to toe and using fists / elbows is most effective.

Taekwondo Question...?

Why does everyone say TKD is acrobatic and only focuses on useless aerial kicks?

1 - Do you realize that demos are flashy just to attract new people? Would you sit through a demo where people only punched and kicked at the air, belt high or lower, and never did anything 'flashy'?

2 - Aerial kicks are a part of the curriculum, but they are not the focus. In TKD there are 6 ways to apply a kick - and 'aerial' encompasses only one of those ways. At that, aerial kicks may not be as effective as another type of kick, but I can guarantee that they are effective.

Don't get me wrong, there are bad schools out there. Please stop saying that all bad schools belong to TKD. ALL martial arts have their bad apples.

Taekwondo Question...?
Anyone who would disparage a traditional martial art discipline with such generalized and imprecise comments is deserving of the silence that should accompany their ill conceived, undeveloped, and irrational diatribe.

Don't worry about those who have little real understanding, knowledge, or experience of TaeKwon-Do. I have studied it for many years, as well as many other marital art disciplines and combat defensive systems, and I was drawn to TaeKwon-Do precisely because it is effective.

Those who believe UFC or MMA are the ultimate proving ground of martial arts efficiency, effectiveness, or reality are as misguided and blinkered as those who believe that WWF wrestling is real. Don't bother with them. From their lack of intelligent converstaion on the matter, and the repeating of simplistic obserations from non-core elements of TaeKwon-Do, it is painfully clear their knoweldge of the subject is lacking and therefore their opinion is of little worth.

I have seen TaeKwon-Do in its many, many forms - good, bad, and indifferent. I have seen many other discplines in exactly the same way, with outstanding insturctors and wonderful schools, and hopelessly midguided instructors and deplorable schools. Each of us must find out own true path and follow that by finding the best mentors, guides, and instructors we can muster. Forget about the detractors.

I have yet to find a quality, experienced, credible, and competent martial artists who would dismiss any other traditional martial arts as "flashy" or "showy". Those with real experience know the inherent values and limitations that exist in every discipline out there, and can separate the UFC/MMA environments from sport and real life physical defensive situations. I would urge you to ignore those who evidently cannot and just keep training :)

Reply:Eh, but not one UFC fighters says anything good about it when asked about TKD. They always start criticizing them. Currently, nobody doing TKD has proved that it's effective. The bad schools are horrible, but the good TKD school wasn't too good from my point of view. They rarely do anything that would hurt them in any ways.
Reply:Just look at the translation of Tae Kwon Do (way of hand and foot) it is a style based on kicking and striking it just happens that your leg is your longest weapon so naturally it should be used. Even Bruce lees system JKD uses your closest weapon to your closest target.

Would you like a girl who is...?

I had a friend, she is really cute physically and personality too, very smart, funny, has a sweet tooth and very cheerful and kind hearted too...but the thing is guys feel intimidated by her because she's top in school, really good in martial arts and very hyperactive. As a friend I'm quite worried because of this she's scaring the guys away...should I advise her to tone down a bit?

Which fighting style should I try?

I am going on 25-years old %26amp; I am thinking about trying martial arts again for the third time. I tried it when I was 14, then when I was 19, now at almost at age 25, I am thinking of doing it again. But I really don't wanna waste my money or time. When I was 14, I tried Jeet-Kune-Do. Then at 19, I tried Chinese Kung-Fu. I'm a life long Bruce Lee fan. Those styles worked for him, but not for me cause I learned nothing from either style. I am not really a physical person. I've always been a big guy and kinda on the chubby side. Not so much more now though, but I am still big. So if I get back into martial arts, what kind of school should I go to? And does martial arts really work in fist fights or is it all for show? Cause most fights I see are guys laying on the ground, wrestling. It seems like UFC ground fighting is the best style out there.

Which fighting style should I try?
For striking: muay thai, kickboxing, boxing, sanshou, kyokushin and shidokan karate.

For grappling: judo, brazilian jujitsu, sambo, wrestling.

Jeet Kune do is more a philosophy than a martial art, to discard what's useless, and to use what works, you could say it's the genesis of modern MMA (mixed martial arts)

"UFC ground fighting" is just a mixture of grappling arts, mentioned above. The most common ones nowadays are brazilian jujitsu and wrestling.

I hope this information is useful.

good luck!
Reply:muay thai is great. i train along with jiu-jitsu. any style can work for you, its just you have to be comfortable with it. i have trained in tae kwon do, kung fu, and a little bif of judo, and loved them all. the reason the UFC guys do what they do is because they have to be trained in multiple disciplines. most of them train muay thai, boxing, greco roman wrestling, jiu-jitsu, and judo. they need all those because there is no tell where the fight might go so they have to be prepared to fight from anywhere.
Reply:What styles are available in your town? I would recommend basing your decision not so much on the specific style, but by the school and instructor. Visit a couple of the dojos around so you can actually see if it's something you are interested in. Ask a lot of questions and observe how the instructor interacts with his/her students. If you let me know what kinds of schools are near you I can try to help a little more. The UFC ground fighting you're talking about is most likely jujitsu. There are also MMA schools, who teach a variety of stand-up and ground fighting techniques. I think it's easier to have a base before joining an MMA school, but that also depends on how good the instructor is.
Reply:I would try the internal martial arts such as Tai Chi. The moves are slow but they hide a wealth of strength if you study for long enough. You will develop self confidence as your balance improves dramatically and you will find that your stress level decreases tremendously, which makes you feel calmer in situations where fighting may be necessary. If you are not really a physical person I definitely recommend the internal martial arts. Although street fighting skills may take longer to develop, you will develop other skills that help more in situations where fights may occur. And the physical and mental benefits from the work is amazing. You will very quickly improve your breath control, increase blood flow through the entire body, and generally improve every aspect of your health. You will be able to quickly bring your body to a calm, relaxed state in any circumstance.
Reply:you should try kickboxing,it will increase your physical ability and fit yourself, then you can try capoeira
Reply:i a gree with syntheticmynd , do muay thai , it will increase your skill in martial art and also burn your fat faster ,...
Reply:anything thats effective in a street fight.
Reply:Before you take any style I would look at why you have not learned on two previous occassions. Perhaps your approach to learning was wrong or the instructors while good martial artists may not have been very good instructors. It could be a combination of both and I have found that some people have a problem learning martial arts so your teaching approach has to be modified to teach them or they flounder. That being said shop around and look for a good instructor who can teach, not one that is just a good martial artist. If you can find one that teaches what appeals to you in so far as the type/style of martial art then thats even better.

While the wrestling, grappling styles are very effective keep in mind that they have rules that favor that type of fighting and the fight going to the ground. No kicks or knees to the groin; no eye or finger jabs; no fish hooking or ear clapping or head butts; no elbows to the spine or rabbit punches to the back of the skull. These are all techniques that a skilled, well trained martial artist would apply in a street situation. They are very effective and end the fight before it ever reaches the ground or while a person is trying to get you to the ground. But if you prefer the ground fighting aspects then look for a well organized instructor who posesses the abilty to teach. Visit each school a couple of times and observe who is teaching and watch the classes. Look to see how he handles a student that is struggling with something and if he succeeds in making a negative into a positive. Also look to see if the instructor presents techniques that are appropriate for the skill level of the students. Some techniques are very difficult to learn if you have not learned something else first. Talk to the students afterwards and see if they are happy with the level and quality of the instruction. So shop around and see what is available and if there is a good instructor out there that teaches it. You will be more likely to find them if you take the time and make the extra effort and probably be much happier in the long run and not feel like you wasted your time or money.
Reply:Well, you can try Aikido, since you're not really "physical." It seems to be a good style to get into after you've matured a bit too. Now that you're 25, you'll probably appreciate martial arts more.
Reply:most schools have a MMA night, where you can learn BJJ,boxing, wresting, judo, etc...pretty much everything, check it out.......it will make you a more rounded martial artist, and you will never get bored
Reply:I think all traditional martial arts disciplines are effective and have something positive to teach anyone, but not all discplines will appeal to everyone.

Clearly you have tried two which did not appeal to you at the time you tried them, but these are most definately two discplines that many people may recommend. Thus I would suggest that you should look at what is available in your area and go check them out for yourself. Talk with the instructor/s, observe a few classes, chat with the students, and maybe try a few classes out before committing.

No-one here can really advise you as there are too many variables. I would not agree with your contention tht UFC seems like the best style out there. UFC is certainly popular right now, but that does not mean it is the best, nor does it mean it will be suitable or appealing to you. Equally, I believe most UFC or MMA fighters are from traditional disciplines and the creation of schools which teach MMA concepts strictly for the UFC/MMA is a relatively new things.

Your size, weight, height, gender, body type etc. etc. really should not have any impact on the effectiveness of the discipline you choose. You can learn something from any discipline. You just have to take some time to find the discipline that most appeals to you :)

Good luck!

Reply:i would suggest judo. you are big, nd judo focuses on throws which would b a good fit...jiu-jitsu if you want to learn ground moves, these two styles used to be one. Samaria's used these arts to throw the enemy to the ground...size is good but technique is more important

Y do people keep one insisting that a little guy can take one some big guy?

i alwas see ppl saying that a 5'6 150 pound guy can take on a 6'0 200 pound guy. I dout that. I'm 5'6 150 and vary scrappy (wrestled through out high school and did martial arts for almost seven years) , but i know i cant take some 6'0 200 dued. I think that a small guy can take a big guy that is not all that good at fighting, but i think that an okay big fighter can take a good small fighter (and a great legindary small fighter can take an okay big guy). Do u think a small guy can take on a big guy? Please before answering read every thing i have to say. I know i'm going to get a lot of crap for this one. There is also one exeption for this, do you know i'm going to say?

Y do people keep one insisting that a little guy can take one some big guy?
wrestling has nothing to do for this.....jju jitsu and some other styles were built and developed for this...the principal behind it is cockyness....if you can use cockyness against someone you have a 'gun like' advantage....and if you train for years to exploit it then its true. ive seen it first hand. i can show you how to put 200 lbs pressure into breaking a guys arm then someone twice your size can use 400lbs pressure...but either way the arm will break and it only takes 10 or so lbs anyway....this works the same with defence
Reply:This is a true story, okay? Have you ever heard of Aikido?

A SMALL(I mean scary small) girl was talking about her martial arts, which just happened to be Aikido. So I also knew this HUGE (I mean really huge. Like really tall and big in both volume and muscle) Kenpo Karate guy who knew only about his own style and didn't think the little girl could beat him, and of course she took offense because he was being so cocky.

Well they sparred once, and he was down in about five seconds. It was like a blur, okay? You saw him try to punch her and she just places her palm over his fist for a second and all you see is them standing there, him laughing and her smiling. You couldn't even see it. He was still on his guard, obviously, because nothing is that easy, and all of a sudden he's on the ground behind her, and she's looking down at him with a smirk on her face.

Now I knew this guy, and he was BIG. Not to be cruel, but he was big, and he was an instructor(but had a lot to learn himself), and he was really good at what he did, but he didn't know about her style, and got his butt handed to him. So yes, if you set your mind to it, you COULD take just about anyone, despite size variations.
Reply:My Thai friend put it best: "If he gets a hold of me I am finished, but he is not going to get a hold of me"

The truth is that size is not the only factor, but only one of many. If you fight a large but slow man with great strength, but kick him in the knee and he cannot attack you, you wins?

Bruce Lee once told a friend as they walked down the beach, upon which they saw a very large bodybuilder who the friend commented on, "He is large, but is he powerful?"

Power is speed AND strength combined. And if your opponent cannot lay a hand on you, what good is his strength, obviously?

Of course you are correct, if both men are equal in size and proportional power, the larger man will probably win. But you must consider all the other factors such as style, speed, overall power....

this a fight between butterbean and genki sudo. butterbean is 400 pounds, and genki sudo is about 160 pounds.

now that's what i call a big weight difference!

the first part is kinda boring you may just want to skip the first half.
Reply:All things being equal except for size by simple physics you are correct. However, in the dynamic world it is never the case that all things are equal, or all things but one are equal. So, a smaller can take a bigger. Although, across the spectrum of sports it is certainly a statistical anomaly. In more chaotic environments the elements of finesse (speed, flexibility, target acquisition, etc...) are superior. However, the most potent thing humans possess is the mind.
Reply:There are cases where smaller people are able to beat up bigger people, but usually the smaller individual is better trained. (As example of Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in Okinawa beating up a bunch of Marines to get Karate Students in the 1950s)
Reply:I have taken people that size and bigger at 5'8 160# when I was on TEAM USA.

Now I could not beat up my cat but when I was in my prime years ago I easily took out big people. they were SLOW, PREDICTABLE, EASY TO MANIPULATE, LARGE TARGETS with LARGE EASY TO KICK KNEES!!

So Id rather fight a large guy almost any day over someone my own size or smaller. they are too wirey and slippery if they are trained as i am.

I speak from personal experience. i have put men over 6'4 to their knees with pressure points or sparring. SIZE matters when BOTH are equally trained. they were not. simple brute force is nothing without harnessing it and sculpting it to fight properly be in MA, boxing, wrestling, but some form of disciplined fighting art.
Reply:"5'6 150 pound fador vs a 6'0 200 point fador."

Same person, one heavier than the other, equal in strength and skill. That would be an interesting fight to see
Reply:Size maters, it is not the only thing that maters. I' know a few fighters around 150 pounds and less that have taken out opponents over 200 pounds. Fighters of nearly equal skill however the advantage goes to size.

If you are used to seeing martial artist who can't fight you may be hanging in the wrong circles.
Reply:You are right man. Most people are idiot, they watch too many movies. If you observed 100 fights, the bigger guy will win 99% of the time. But they always make a big deal when the little guy win that one time. They always mention Royce Gracie or Bruce Lee or someone like that, an exception, a rarities, not the norm. That is why they have weight classes, why don't they put them all together if weight doesn't matter, I tell you why because the heavyweight will wipe the floor with the lightweight, that's why lol...and the reason the big guy has an advantage because he can take the smaller man punch and kick, on the other hand the smaller man will get knock out when get hit by the bigger man...
Reply:, people sending you links of fights that happen one out of a million times. yeah Fedor the greatest fighter on earth knocks out a big fat black guy with minamil fighting , experince big deal that just proves the questioners point.

yeah if the smaller guy has simillar skill as the bigger guy , the bigger guy will win , with his sheer size , power , and reach advantage , dont listen to the B.S. , people say that because its fun too see the little guy win. people watch to many movies and think the smaller guy is the good guy , the bigger guy is the bad guy , and the little guy can win. , NO in real life you will get the crap beat outa you by some one who is much bigger than you , so people stop beliving in your little david vs. goliath fairy tales. thats why the ufc has weight classes, because if jeff monson would punch a 155 jens pulver , jens head would snap off his spine.
Reply:I would certainly rather be the big guy. It is a great advantage. But I think it is more common than people think for a smaller guy to win. I hear of it all the time. My own personal experience was when I wrestled a guy who was 3 inches taller than me and about 40 pounds heavier (mostly muscle, too). I have been used to wrestling bigger people, and just used his momentum against him to bring him to the ground. Once I put him down on his back, he was useless. It was like he was never there before and had no idea what to do. But then again, to make the others point, this is the story I remember 10 years later, not all the times I beat people smaller than me. But I think we all know the answer: A small guy can take a bigger one, but if other things are equal, he is at a great disadvantage.
Reply:Because it is perfectly true. All other things being equal (skill, speed, style, strength of chin, etc.) the big guy will win.....but a fight with two fighters of identical strengths and weaknesses is very rare. My best friend and I are a good example....I'm 5'11" and 160-165, he's about 90 pounds more than that. His strength gives him a great advantage, but if i close the difference, we fight on equal standing as his chokes are good, but his submissions are not. My buddy Jeff is 130, but I never even spar with him as I'm just not to his level and would likely be hurt.

What commercial is this and where can i find it?

This commercial was on a while back. There were two separate ones. One were boys around middle school age, doing martial arts, kicking 540s and flips. And the other were girls some age, doing flips and kicks as well. I forgot was it old navy, gap, or something else. If I can recall, it was for some sort of pants. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's on youtube or somewhere that i can download it.

What commercial is this and where can i find it?
It was for the Gap.

They also had actresses Sara Jessica Parker, and Queen Latifa in advertisements for the womans collection.

I am not sure if they have it on their website? but maybe if you are able to ask customer service online a question, narrowing it down and identifying that it was the Gap helped?

Suspected low testosterone, how to convince my parents to O.K. a blood test?

I'm in my late teens and have all of my androgenic attributes (Deep voice, pubic hair etc...) but one thing that keeps nagging me is the fact that I'm suffering from depression and low energy as well as feeling weak and feeble.

About 2 years ago I was on top of life (figuratively) and was very popular and active in school. Unfortunately in martial arts I was struck severely in the groin several times. I stopped practicing soon after (for unrelated reasons) and slowly over weeks and months the depression began.

Recently I've lost almost all of my sex drive as well. This is very disturbing to me but my parents (which are to my knowledge required at this point in my life to permit my doctor to run a blood test) will not listen to me, they dismiss these symptoms as trivial and hypochondriatic.

I'm well aware of the dangers of low testosterone in men and would like to have peace of mind or treatment if it is indeed an issue but cannot until my parents secede. I also suffer gynecomastia

Suspected low testosterone, how to convince my parents to O.K. a blood test?
Have you discussed any of this with a doctor. I mean if you were to have a regular doctor's appointment, once you are in the patient's room, you can ask your doctor any questions you may have, or you can address your concerns to him/her. Anything said between you and the doctor is confidential (if you're 18), but you can ask what the laws are in your state. You should feel like you can talk with a doctor about this if you feel the need to come to us. There is nothing you can say to them that will surprise them.

If there is a need for a blood-test, surely your physician can talk sense to your parents. Do they know how truly concerned you are about this? Have you really let them know that this is important to you?

It is not uncommon to lose that "top of life" feeling after high school. That is something you can discuss with your doctor or a counselor as well. Don't let it consume you.
Reply:First, I'd suggest you talk to a counselor. All the changes you're talking about can be stress or depression related. Otherwise since your parents think this is 'trivial' I'm think you should tell them that you have groin pain and think you should see a doctor. You may find that if you talk this out with a professional face to face, things will become better fairly quickly. Good luck, you sound like a solid guy.

Help 6 year old wild man.?

My 6 year old is really trying my patients along with the patients of other adults he comes into contact with. I have tried almost everything. He is disruptive in school, and at martial arts. At home he is distructive and hateful. I have tried the soft spoken approch, the you listen know approch, and the heavy strick disiplain approch. We have even talked to the doctor and No he's not ADD or ADHD. They say he's just a boy. I find it hard to believe that most boys are this hard. So now I am at the end of my rope and the only form of disipline Left that I know is Marine Corp. Style.

As an exmarine I know this form well, but I am reluctant to use it. So my question is do you think it would me inappropriate to use military style disipline to correct the horrible behavior of a child?

For those who are unfilmilar with this form it is loud and very physically demanding. I don't even know if push ups and running will stop his bad behavior. Do you think this might work or do you have any ideas

if you have tried everything else and dr's dont seem to help then go for it. more parents need to use that style in my opinion. maybe there wouldnt be so much crap going on with kids these days. I know i spank my kids and they use their manners. i have also slapped the crap out of them at age six when they tried my patients in front of other people and every time i have gotten a good for you mom!!
Reply:If that's the only thing left to do well then it seems like you have no other choice. My little cousin was like that and they put him in that military school. He's like 11 now and I don't think they have too many problems with him anymore. Well good luck with whatever you decide
Reply:We had this problem with my son, he used to get into fights all the time, fighting with teachers and throwing furniture around at school, walked out a few times and went for his best mate with a sword- we tried all sorts including 3 full terms of anger management which didn't work at all, it turned out to be due to food allergies but it took 4 years to get results through doctors etc. Now he is fantastic as long as he watches what he eats.

Try taking note of what he is eating and how his behaviour is afterwards, start taking out things which seem to trigger him. In my son's case it turned out to be wheat based foods and certain sweets (especially haribo or skittles) if he has any of these you generally see the effect very soon after.

If it is caused by allergies like this he really can't help himself.

Good luck.

Can someone help me decide PLEASE?!!?

should i be a doctor that will mean 8 more years of hard work and school or a martial arts trainer which requires at least 2 years of eqully though training in China? By the way, I'm a girl, which makes a lot of difference which career i choose. I love martial arts but it hard being an instructor if you're a girl. My family and i also wants me to be a doctor.

Can someone help me decide PLEASE?!!?
i think you should chose whats in your heart.
Reply:Up to you, but do what you love or you'll have many years to regret it!
Reply:be a doctor do other stuff part time
Reply:Be a doctor and practice martial arts on the side.
Reply:Do what you want!! and what you want to do the rest of your life!!
Reply:go with what you want would you rather love what you do or make lost of money it is your chose and china would be cool i would go with martial arts if i were you women can do anything they set their mind to
Reply:It's all about what you want to do with your life.
Reply:I think you should become a professional Dungeons and Dragons Quest Master.
Reply:Honestly I think only you can answer that. I mean I could throw in a "be a doctor" but I don't know what is really in your heart, what you are passionate about, only you know that! Good luck

That's your answer.
Reply:i think you should be whoever you want to be. whatever job you would have the most fun with. you only get one life, so enjoy it.
Reply:What do you want to do?

That is the most important.
Reply:Doctor. You can save peoples lives and everything will be good. Unless you really want to teach martial arts?
Reply:I wouldn't leave your career choice in the hands of total strangers.
Reply:it depends on what YOU like, not others. if you want to be a doctor, become one. if you want to be a martial arts instructor, then become one. if you love martial arts so much, then you should have the confidence to be capable of becoming a good instructor. don't waste your life on money and donot depend on others to tell you what to do. do what you love.

be that as it may, you shouldnot ask this question here because you never know who might influence you to do what. this was my opinion, so don't think what i said was right. others might tell you something different. hope this helps! happy newyear!!!
Reply:Even if you were male, becoming a martial arts trainer does not pay as well and it is more unpredictable. As a doctor, you will always have a job. If you don't want to go to medcal school for that long, then try something else in the medical field, such as beng a Physician Assistant or a nurse. Good luck.
Reply:you should go with what is in your heart

go with whatever ypu can see yourself doing later in life

o yea martial arts is fun =]
Reply:Follow your heart because if you try to do something for the amount of money and you truly don't want to do that you won't enjoy what you do.
Reply:Do what is in your heart and you will not be wrong./

Need to know how to backflip, but there are a few problems...?

hey,i need to know how to do an ariel backflip. not the one where you lay on the ground. but there are no schools that teach martial arts within 100 miles of me! also,im fat(230 pounds, some people dont think it is that fat, trust me it is),if that somehow limits me. could someone tell me how to do a backflip?

Need to know how to backflip, but there are a few problems...?
first step is to reduce your body weight...

next step is to improve your core strength

then improve lower body fast twitch muscles...

get a safe place to practice

then start practicing it...

in your situation i would estimate at least 18 months before you achieve it...

Question for parents of girls of any age?

Would you rather see the schools teach girls martial arts for P.E. class or other sports? It seems like it would be better for them to learn to protect themselves. Do you think that if enough parents got together that they would be willing to do something like that? I think starting in kindergarden and going thru high school is better than them going gymnastics, soccer, or other sports. These sports are great if they want to do them, but they do not teach them to protect themselves.

Question for parents of girls of any age?
I agree. Girls and boys should be taught to defend themselves. It would be much more beneficial to learn martial arts than play dodge ball or some other silly game.
Reply:No one said kids CAN'T be taught karate. But you can't use karate chops if your 'date' is on top of you holding you down. But you can use COMMON SENSE taught to you by your parents, which says only date in groups and in open settings...especially younger kids. Report It

Reply:My daughter took Karate and it was a great experience for her! I like your idea. Keep trying to make it happen!
Reply:The P.E. has to be fun. Do you really think your daughter would use Karate on an attacker?
Reply:Sounds like a good idea.
Reply:I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD DO ALL THESE SPORTS AND MARTIAL ARTS AS WELL, Y DO ONE WHEN YOU CAN DO ALL
Reply:I'm sure state board of education guidelines require that the PE curriculum be varied. However, I bet a group of parents could get them to ADD martial arts.

Great idea!
Reply:every once and awhile on wednesdays a volunteer comes to teach the class about martial arts. Good idea. Try writing to the state.
Reply:I think is only appropriate for children that are mature enough to understand that martial arts is for protection, not bullying.

I think it's important for children to be able to run around and play dodge ball and burn off some energy and most importantly have fun while in PE.

Martial arts is great, but it requires a lot of patience and work and not everyone is into it.

The games are important part of PE, it gives them excerise as well as fun. Martial arts would be a great thing to introduce into PE, but not to replace PE.
Reply:Sure, and on rainy days we can take them out to the shooting range so they can learn some more self defense.

My wife's an ex-soccer chick, trust me, with her thighs and calves, one good kick (w/o the martial arts) and she'll but anyone down.
Reply:I agree somewhat. If they do do Martial Arts it shouldn't just be for girls. I don't think you should get rid of the games in P.E. completely just for Martial Arts. You shouldn't start kids in kindergarden since they're only 5 years old. It takes to much commitment for them. Martial Arts should be taught as an Extra Activity out of school hours like track. Plus takes about 3or more years to become a black belt. It'd teach them discipline, determination, commitment, etc.
Reply:it be nice for girls to do just like that, me iam a master and you can take any class at any age and i know more people takeing classes in collage so it good for women to do as you say ,, ask mom and dad ,,
Reply:i think it is a good idea perhaps teach the girls more affective moves than the boys incase of rape like u says

but bad points towards it is it may cause more fights in school more fights that will be unable 2 control and some of them might use the moves to there advantage

but good idea tho
Reply:I agree with you some, but parts of your questions open you up for debate.

1. You say alot of girls are date raped.

This may be true, but instead of teaching girls how to fight themselves out of the situation, how about we educate them FIRST on the best ways to prevent ever being in a situation like this. Things like never walk alone after dark, and never drink liquor around people you don't know and trust well.

2. You stated to teach martial arts to the girls but not the boys.

This is very biased, especially since boys typically get bullied more than girls. Again I say educate the girls (and boys) FIRST to avoid bullies and notify authorities when they are harassed. Kids on the playground karate chopping each other isn't the best solution.

With all that said, I definitely would make sure any daughters of mine know basic self-defense. But educating them to avoid bad situations will be the most important lesson I can teach.
Reply:That's a great idea. They should also teach chess. The 2 side by side are weaponry (should they need to defend themselves).
Reply:When i was in prek we had a martial arts class

How useful is pentjak silat in self defense? Are there any credible schools teaching it in Singapore?

Or any other martial art that is good in self defense?

How useful is pentjak silat in self defense? Are there any credible schools teaching it in Singapore?
Silat or Pentjak (Pencak) Silat is a generic term of the art, like Kung Fu for example, where u can find a lot of variations from different schools. Silat is a very effective combat art sometimes combined with a unique 'tari' (like 'dance' in a capoiera). U can also learn weapons like Parang, Keris, Kerambit, etc. Silat has a wide variation of styles, theres a Silat Cekak where the movements are like Aikido, but the most popular ones like Gayong for example, has strikes, locks, etc. Im not sure about Silat school in Singapore, but in Malaysia, u can find many Silat schools, and usually Silat is trained in the village areas, in a traditional way.

Silat is useful, and theres no definite answer of which art is the best, its up to what you want and what you like, and find a right school. As for myself, im a Pesilat and Aikidoka.

Good luck.
Reply:Superb hardcore fighting art.

Just watch for the magick that some use......................
Reply:I do not know whether there are any pencak silat school in singapore, but as far as i know, I think it is not very useful nor practical.
Reply:It's very practical. And very Effective it is destructive and force ful any one that says it is not practical has not fought some one that is a master at it. I have fought many diverse and wide range of martial artists and if harnessed it is as effective as Muay Thai kick boxing. Pentjak silat is a boxing for because you use a structured amount of moves. good luck in finding a school
Reply:carry a concealed knife lol... much better

Does anyone know any Ba Gua instructors or schools in west houston?

I need to know about the best ones. (Ba Gua is a Chinese martial art) I am intersted in learning it for self defense and not "heightened well being" or any thing like that.

Does anyone know any Ba Gua instructors or schools in west houston?
If you're looking at the internal Chinese arts for practical fighting purposes....especially amongst the Neija internal styles, I'd go for Xingyiquan over Baguazhang in a second.

It's easier to learn, and much more practical in combat. I've studied both, and while Bagua is interesting....from a practicality aspect, Xingyi destroys it.

Think from this perspective, that's what the Muslim Chinese have used in warfare for centuries.

As to teachers in West Houston....I'm not sure. Why don't you try checking around through the Chinese districts of Westheimer Blvd (through Bellaire)....I'm sure you'd have better luck there than on here.

What is the best way to become a martial art fighter without training?

recently I just become popular at school... so i was thinking of showing of my skills to them... give me the best answer.... dont let me down dude!!!

What is the best way to become a martial art fighter without training?
Just get yourself a Chuck Norris mask.
Reply:you kinda have to train...... even if its not in an "official" dojo or whatever. just read books and practice what it says in them, because you gotta practice somehow.
Reply:through osmosis, if you were capable of such a thing, but your not so you have to train, just like you would if you wanted to be good at anything
Reply:Dink a case of Red Bull and watch a Bruce Lee marathon, that should do it!
Reply:Sorry but its impossible. My bf does Wing Chun - Kung Fu and 60% of it is traning and the other 40% is disapline.

You could try looking up how to condition your body.
Reply:watch lots of bruce lee movies
Reply:DUDE you can't be a martial arts fighter without knowing martial arts DUHHHHH DUDE you say that you became popular at school. obviously not for your brain DUHHHHHH DUDE
Reply:smoke some bud, watch you tube and think about how sexy you would be to kick someones a**. Then swing you arms and legs and make cool karate chopping noises. You will be good in nooo time.
Reply:know one who is actually popular sits around thinking "I'm glad to be popular" your still a loser on the inside and obviously to become a martial arts fighter you've gotta know martial arts dumbass
Reply:Fight students at school that are much weaker than you, typically the majority of these students will be girls.

Make sure to do your research to find out if they know martial arts themselves before you go choosing the unlucky victim of your natural god given martial arts fists of fury.
Reply:That's like asking...

"How do I become a Chef without actually having to cook anything?".

Ludicrous question.
Reply:You cant become a martial arts fighter without training. Books and videos alone wont cut it at all. They are training aids to be used along with proper instruction and physical stregnth training and conditioning. Trust me, real fighting efficiency is all about reaction time, strength, good tecnhique and ability.

You can not get thiswithout training at a gym or martial arts school. Especially good technique. If your sole purpose is to impress your friends with fancy martial arts techniques (which is a stupid idea IMO no offense, but it just seems like a waste of money and time) then traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu has a number of fancy wrist and arm locks that will be sure to impress, however it tends to be quite expensive to train in. Wushu has the flips and flying kicks that are largely ineffective for fights, but it does look fancy.

If you want to impress your friends with true combat effictiveness rather than flashy moves (which they will probably be alot more impressed with anyway) and actually learn how to fight, then arts like Judo, (the throws in Judo will still look VERY impressive if executed well, and its a VERY effective art for kicking people ***) Wrestling or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Judo is dirt cheap, and if you live in the US your high school most likely would have a wrestling team. Girls love strong wrestlers man. Girls love fit BJJ guys too, however BJJ is probably the most expensive out of the arts I listed.

Muay Thai, Boxing and Kyokushin are the most effective striking styles (fist and kicks) that will be very impressive to onlookers if you have to fight someone. However they arent really a good option for demonstrating on friends because they are striking arts and would hurt them. Your friends probably wouldnt like you to much if you went around hitting them. However they will make you extrememly fit if you train hard and Kyokushin will make your body tough as nails. Surely impressive. Plus you'll have the added benefit of having self confidence and knowing you will be able to defend yourself should the need arise, which will become apparent in your everyday demeanor. Girls can smell confidence, so it's a good thing to have. Do not take a style of karate other than Kyokushin though, the other styles tend to be lazy on training and far less effective, inspiring false confidence.

Train in any of those arts I mentioned (except JJJ and Wushu) and you will be able to kick most peoples asses and youre friends will feel very safe around you and love it.

BTW to the girl that said her boyfriend trains at a Wing Chun school which does 60% training and 40%. Tell him to quit and do something better immediately. A good martial arts school should be 100% training ALWAYS. Unless hes a child he doesn't need dicipline, and if he does theres always the army. He's being ripped off to be blunt.
Reply:Training is the answer!!! but since youre doing it just to look like Biff from Back to the Future, check a few Internet sites out which gives tips and fighting techniques, learn them at home, and try and look good.

Reply:Here's an idea, stop trying to be someone you are not. Dude.
Reply:Yo dude,by watching the videos only you would not be able to fight.train is to see which part that you can't do the moves, train and train and train to make that move flawless. And also to try out the moves that u have picked out.good luck
Reply:Dude you rule!!!!!!! Here are the steps I would take to become a great fighter without having to train.

1) Get a video game consol

2) Get any good fighting game

3) Do whatever you have to do to get in your zone. Obviously you are intelligent so I'm guessing smoke some bud or drink some bud.

4) Play for 3 days straight.

5) go to school and find the biggest dude you can and call him a girl.

6) When he gets mad drop into whatever fighting stance worked best for you in the video game.

7) Shout load so that everyone can see you and attack him.

8) Wake up in the school nurses office or the hospital.

YOU ROCK DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: To SHAUNY D- I take offense at your statement that only kyokushin is the only effective karate style. While I only have 18 years in the martial arts compared to your 7, I still feel qualified to make this statement. I Train Isshin-Ryu karate, which unlike kyokushin has no rules. We can punch to the head. I also have met many Isshin-ryu masters who have been training longer than you have been alive, and you would hope you never pressed them into a corner where they had to fight if it was for real. I have also met masters from Shorin-Ryu, Gojo-Ryu, Uechi-Ryu that could put the hurt to you also. I am not saying Isshin-Ryu is the best, but you should know what you are talking about before you spout off.

2nd edit: Lord_Odd-In no way did I state that Isshin-Ryu was superior to any other art. I actually mentioned other styles. As far as no one saying one karate style is better than another I quote from Shauny D'd post:

"Do not take a style of karate other than Kyokushin though, the other styles tend to be lazy on training and far less effective, inspiring false confidence."

I do reseect Kyoshin karate, as I try and restpect all styles for what they are. I am only defending a style that I have devoted my life to, and one that I know is highly effective in reality.
Reply:go the hood, walk up to some thugs on the corner, and curse them out.............this will prepare you for any street fight.........EVENTUALLY. :)
Reply:Go to the nearest bar ask the bartender to point out the toughest guy in the joint light a cigar and put it out in his beer while saying something nasty about his momma.

After you get out of hospital go back and do it again and keep on doing it until you can put him in hospital. That's the quick but painful way to learn the other way is to actually take lessons and learn.
Reply:You need to control your ego, it it will be your downfall.

The means have to justify the ends, there can be no other way.

The only way to be a martial art fighter is to train.

Find another method, fighting is for people that are not intelligent enough to find a peaceful solution.
Reply:You can't become anything without training.

That's like thinking you could be a doctor without going to medical school.

katana17: Chill out. I don't think anyone is saying that a particular style is better than another. Kyokushin karate has been in the public eye for a long time and has its benefits. Just because it has a sporting aspect doesn't make it inferior to your art.
Reply:Some people do things with natural talent. Take for instance some kids have a natural talent of drawing without even studying it. Whether you can do it or not, thats on you. I learned most of my moves from practice and my passion for it. Then some I learned from fighting gyms and other fighters' experience. Who was the 1st martial artist in the world? Where did he/she train? Who taught them? You can do it, be a martial artist. But you still have to train to be the best, whether its on your own or with others.
Reply:Your an idiot.

And watch what you say. A really martial artist could here you talking s**t and come and kick your **s.... dood
Reply:I won't come down on you like some of the previous answers and I'll assume this odd question is actually serious.

The best I can tell you is to watch a couple of youtube videos on simple one legged takedowns and then moving to an armbar. The kind you always saw in the early UFCs. I wouldn't recommend doing this though, in high school some jerk is gonna want to try an see if he is a better fighter than you and you will probably get pummelled if he's any good.
Reply:What you want isn't possible, and the fact that you'd even ask a question like the seriously shows that not only aren't you able to do it now, but you'll probably never be able to in the end. Martial arts aren't for expanding your fleeting highschool popularity, and you'll never be very good at them with this type of mindset. Sorry, I know it's not what you wanted to hear.
Reply:you will never be a martial arts fighter you prat!! if you want it you have to train, you have neither the will power or disciplne, your a looser
Reply:short answer you can not

But if you read alot of books watch alot of vids then yes you will become smarter in theory. and make is seem like you know alot about martial arts seeing and doing is two different things. so why would any one want to be something they are not.
Reply:first you gotta, shut the ***** up.
