There is a good school that teaches, judo, kendo, and Goshin Jujitsu (i'm not sure if thats traditional).
And there is another school that teaches aikido
Which martial art should I learn??
I want to learn a good martial art to prepare for the military (west point) What should I choose between these
Any one that will give you a strong conditioning to do 45 push-ups, 45 sit-ups, 10 pull-ups, and 2-5 mile runs with ease. You'll likely pick up some martial arts when you're there, but the fitness standard is based on the events I listed. Don't get me wrong; any martial art is better than none, but you need to concentrate on the basics of physical conditioning, fitness and strength.
Good luck to you!
Reply:the one where you run 5 miles every morning....Judo would suit your goals best though..I think the Point has a Judo team...
Reply:aikido - Their offense turns into your offense
Reply:I would suggest general conditioning instead, just so there are no bad habits that you have unlearn. Tumbling and gymastics will greatly improve your strength, flexibility and positional awareness and would be great preparations.
Reply:The military "martial arts" are a bit like judo anyhow, so that's probably the direction I would go. But whatever you do, work on pull ups, push ups, sit ups, and running, running, running....Do sprints, do distance, do it all and get used to it :-)
Reply:First of all its not a requirment for the West Point academy
for you to be a Jackie Chan,, If you want to do this for
a disipline and work out regiment fine,, Your officer MOS
will determine what skill levels you will need physically.
If your leaning tword a Special Operations unit, etc they will
teach you all you will ever need to know,,
Good luck and I hope you do well.
PS I have two sons that are West Point Grads.
Reply:I would say judo
but theres one called mau tie i dont know it thats how its spelt but its dirty like knees to the face and everything accept head but and biting
Reply:Judo most realistic Kendos a sword art
Reply:Go Mixed, that way you have more to draw from if you ever need to fight hand to hand.

Reply:The army combatives is based off of Gracey Jui Jit Su. Seeing as how you are going to be joining the military I would sugest that. Going to westpoint to become an officer doesnt have anything to do with what style to learn Good luck and I hope this help some.
Reply:Id lean towards aikido, lots of mental discipline and focus involved ,should be a good choice for an officer...the military will teach you any combat forms that you need to learn.
Reply:aikido it's well balanced but it also depends on you physical capability's
Reply:Goshin Jiujitsu is an art that is taught outside of japan and out of those it is a more comprehensive art. It has aspects of judo and Aikido in it as well as kendo interwoven into its teacing. My money would be on that. But really most schools give an introductory class, try each of them out and pick whichever one that you like. All of these arts are great for learning a basic form of combat.
Reply:well first you need great conditioning. next you need to be good with your hands. all of the martial arts that have been listed are good and have their place. they are effective also. but as far as combat, you NEVER want to be on the ground. you need to be able to dispatch opponents quickly and with devastating results. i would take competitive kickboxing, with some weeping style jujitsu, pankration is okay if you want to learn ground fighting skills, which wouldnt be a bad thing. although you do not want to end up on the ground, if you do you need to be able to get up quickly.
Reply:the best weapon like that is a baseball bat, something like the cave men discovered a long time ago. only thing better is a semiauto sawed-off shotgun.
Reply:well things like judo and jujitsu wont help you in the military as much becasue they are just throwing martil arts - i would go for a more attacking martial arts than a passive one like one that teaches you throws
Reply:if you can find a place that teaches isshinryu, shorinryu, or gojuryu- those are the best i study isshinryu..not sure of the spellinggs...never heard of the ones you are choosing btween
