Taekwondo Question...?

Why does everyone say TKD is acrobatic and only focuses on useless aerial kicks?

1 - Do you realize that demos are flashy just to attract new people? Would you sit through a demo where people only punched and kicked at the air, belt high or lower, and never did anything 'flashy'?

2 - Aerial kicks are a part of the curriculum, but they are not the focus. In TKD there are 6 ways to apply a kick - and 'aerial' encompasses only one of those ways. At that, aerial kicks may not be as effective as another type of kick, but I can guarantee that they are effective.

Don't get me wrong, there are bad schools out there. Please stop saying that all bad schools belong to TKD. ALL martial arts have their bad apples.

Taekwondo Question...?
Anyone who would disparage a traditional martial art discipline with such generalized and imprecise comments is deserving of the silence that should accompany their ill conceived, undeveloped, and irrational diatribe.

Don't worry about those who have little real understanding, knowledge, or experience of TaeKwon-Do. I have studied it for many years, as well as many other marital art disciplines and combat defensive systems, and I was drawn to TaeKwon-Do precisely because it is effective.

Those who believe UFC or MMA are the ultimate proving ground of martial arts efficiency, effectiveness, or reality are as misguided and blinkered as those who believe that WWF wrestling is real. Don't bother with them. From their lack of intelligent converstaion on the matter, and the repeating of simplistic obserations from non-core elements of TaeKwon-Do, it is painfully clear their knoweldge of the subject is lacking and therefore their opinion is of little worth.

I have seen TaeKwon-Do in its many, many forms - good, bad, and indifferent. I have seen many other discplines in exactly the same way, with outstanding insturctors and wonderful schools, and hopelessly midguided instructors and deplorable schools. Each of us must find out own true path and follow that by finding the best mentors, guides, and instructors we can muster. Forget about the detractors.

I have yet to find a quality, experienced, credible, and competent martial artists who would dismiss any other traditional martial arts as "flashy" or "showy". Those with real experience know the inherent values and limitations that exist in every discipline out there, and can separate the UFC/MMA environments from sport and real life physical defensive situations. I would urge you to ignore those who evidently cannot and just keep training :)

Reply:I agree, I have seen good and bad schools in most styles.
Reply:Eh, but not one UFC fighters says anything good about it when asked about TKD. They always start criticizing them. Currently, nobody doing TKD has proved that it's effective. The bad schools are horrible, but the good TKD school wasn't too good from my point of view. They rarely do anything that would hurt them in any ways.
Reply:Just look at the translation of Tae Kwon Do (way of hand and foot) it is a style based on kicking and striking it just happens that your leg is your longest weapon so naturally it should be used. Even Bruce lees system JKD uses your closest weapon to your closest target.
