I need help with a math problem that i dont really understand.... help(problem below)?

for every girl taking classes at the martial arts school, there are 3 boys who are taking classes at that school. If there are 236 students taking classes, write and solve a proportion to predict the number of boys taking classes at the school.

I need help with a math problem that i dont really understand.... help(problem below)?
If 3/4 (75%) of the whole school is made up of boys then the answer is 1 : 177.
Reply:boys/girls =b/g =3/1 so b=3g

and b+g=236

4g=236 so g = 59 and b= 177
Reply:236 * 3/4 =

177
Reply:My guess is 236 divided by 4 (1 girl to 3 boys)

That equals 59. Now multiply 59 by 3 (to get the number of boys)

The answer is 177.
Reply:4 over 1= 236 over 1

4=236

there are 59 girls and 177 guyz
Reply:Let g = # of girls

Let 3g = # of boys

g + 3g = 236

4g = 236

Divide both sides by 4.

g = 59

3g = 177

There are 177 boys.
Reply:the wording might get confusing, but if you write out the variables you are going to use it makes these types of problems a lot easier :D.

g=girls

b=boys

t= total students

ok, now that we have defined variables lets see what data we have to work with:

g=g

b=3g

t=236

lets just use one variable so that it makes the equation easier to handle, we will use g.

so the equation is:

g+3g=236

add like terms:

4g=236

divide each side by 4 to find g:

g=59

59 girls

3x59= 177 boys

enjoy and good luck
